The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors appropriated more than $22,000 last night to pay for the overtime expanded by the sheriff's office during last week's tragic events.
"My deputies worked 957.25 of overtime during the period of August 20 and 21," said Sheriff Tommy Whitt, when asking for the additional money. "I'd rather have them paid overtime in lieu of giving them time off, which would cause us to run skeleton shifts, which could jeopardize public safety." The BOS appropriated a total of $22,658.95 to the sheriff's office by a unanimous vote for the overtime worked. Whitt went on to thank everyone for the support that has been shown by the citizens, businesses, government agencies and all of the area law enforcement agencies toward the sheriff's office. On the public hearing slate, three items were discussed, drawing very few citizen comments One of the items discussed was a request by George Lucas (Agent: Gay and Neel) to rezone 81.883 acres from Agriculture (A-1) to Rural Residential (RR), with possible proffered conditions, to allow a 41 lot single-family residential subdivision. The property is located approximately 2500 feet northeast from the intersection of Childress Road (Rte. 693) and Dry Valley Road (Rte. 693). In a 6-1 vote earlier this month, the Planning Commission recommended approval of the above request with proffers. Jerry Brown, who was the only one to speak concerning the Lucas request, said, "This request does not follow the county's comprehensive plan. Plus, the traffic will double and even triple in the area." Unlike a prior meeting a couple of months ago where several speakers spoke out against a proposal for a cell tower in the Brush Mountain area, two people came out in support of NTELOS' request for a new tower just up the road on Route 460 near Pandapas Pond Road). Lawrence A. Price, Jr. (Agent: NTELOS) is requesting a Special Use Permit on approximately 11.884 acres in General Business (GB) to allow a 120 foot brown monopole with flush mounted antennas and associated ground equipment cabinets. The property is located on the north side of Pandapas Pond Road (Rte. 460) just 2000 feet east of the Giles County line. The Planning Commission on a 7-0 vote recommended approval of the above request with several conditions earlier in the month. The last item discussed concerned a proposed ordinance to amend Chapter 3, Article V, entitled Dangerous or Vicious Dogs, Section 3-50 through 3-54 respectively of the Code of Montgomery, Virginia, in order to incorporate the State Enabling Law Changes Regulating Dangerous or Vicious Dogs. The Board will vote on these three items at its Sept. 11 meeting. The next meeting of the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 11. The closed meeting starts at 6 p.m. The regular meeting starts at 7:15 p.m. |
